Following Zohran Mamdani’s victory in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary on Tuesday, President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to express his strong disapproval of the results in characteristically blunt terms.
“It’s finally happened, the Democrats have crossed the line. Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor,” Trump wrote in his initial post on the platform.
The president continued his criticism, stating, “We’ve had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous,” before launching into personal commentary about the candidate’s appearance and abilities. Trump also referenced what he termed “AOC+3” supporters and mentioned Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s backing of Mamdani.
Mamdani’s Platform and Victory
The 33-year-old state assemblymember secured his primary win on a progressive platform focused on urban affordability. His policy proposals include implementing rent freezes, providing free public transportation, establishing no-cost childcare programs, and other measures aimed at reducing living costs for city residents.
Mamdani has framed his campaign as representing a pivotal moment for the Democratic Party’s direction, positioning himself as an advocate for working-class interests in America’s largest city.
Labor and Political Support
The United Auto Workers union, which was among the first major organizations to endorse Mamdani, celebrated the victory on social media platform X. “The working class is done with business as usual. We were proud to be the first union to endorse Zohran because it’s time for a political movement that puts the working class first,” the union posted. “Our members spoke out and turned out in a big way – and we’re just getting started.”
The endorsement reflects broader labor support for Mamdani’s candidacy, with various unions and Democratic lawmakers expressing enthusiasm for his progressive agenda.
Continued Presidential Commentary
Trump’s response to the primary results extended beyond his initial post. In a follow-up message, he suggested an alternative Democratic ticket featuring Representative Jasmine Crockett for president, with members of what he calls “AOC+3” (referring to progressive House members) in vice presidential and cabinet roles.
“Added together with our future Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, and our Country is really SCREWED!” Trump concluded in his second post.
Mamdani’s Response
When asked about Trump’s comments during a Wednesday interview with ABC News, Mamdani maintained a measured tone. “You know, this is not the first time that President Trump is going to comment on myself, and I encourage him – just like I encourage every New Yorker – to learn about my actual policies to make the city affordable,” he said.
In his victory speech following the primary, Mamdani committed to opposing what he characterized as “Donald Trump’s fascism” and promised to resist federal immigration policies he considers harsh. He positioned his mayoral campaign as a potential template for the broader Democratic Party’s future direction.
The primary victory sets up Mamdani as the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, where he will face Republican opposition in the general election. His success represents a significant win for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party in one of the nation’s most prominent municipal races.
